    How to use the Keyword Research Database

    The SERPs Keyword Research Database is a free tool that allows you to search for high-value keywords and then filter the results to build a list of relevant results.

    To start, just type a starter keyword into the search field - it's often good start with a broad topic query made up of just a couple of words to get the most results

    The Keyword Results Column:

    The search results will then appear in the left-hand column.

    The results lists out the keyword, the estimated search volume (monthly exact match), the estimated CPC and a calculated "value" score which is volume multiplied by CPC. By default the results are ordered by value.

    You can reorder the results alphabetically, by volume or CPC by click on the column headers.

    The search results table also lets you filter for keywords using the "filter keyword" search field. This lets you search within the list to find different sub-sets of keywords.

    For instance, we might want to find all of the keywords that have the word "free" in them. To clear your search, just delete the text in the search field.

    Building Your Keyword List

    Each keyword has a button and a button. The button lets you add the keyword to your saved list. This is the list that will persist between multiple searches, so you can build up a list of keywords made up of the results of multiple research queries.

    The button removes the keyword from the working list.

    You can save or remove multiple keywords at a time by toggling the checkbox in each row you want to select, and then using the or at the top of the results list. This will apply that action to all the selected keywords.

    You can also select all the keywords in your current view by toggling the checkbox at the top of the list. This can be useful when you've filtered your reuslts list and you want to add all of the filtered results.

    By default, the results are paginated and selecting all in view will only select your current page of results. This is so you can order your results (for instance, by search volume) but then only add the most search queries rather than the whole list.

    If you want to add the whole list (or filtered list), go to the bottom of the keyword results table and click "View as a single page".

    The saved list will stay saved beween multiple keyword searches so long as you don't refresh the page. The list lets you reorder by the same table headers.

    To remove keywords from your saved list, either click the button by specific keyword, or select all the keywords you wish to delete and hit the button at the top of the list. You will be prompted with a message to confirm you want to delete those keywords (to prevent accidential deletions!)

    You can download your complete list using the "Download as CSV" button. The CSV has the keyword, volume, CPC and value columns.

On the one hand, SEO best practices recommend that you include relevant keywords in a number of high-attention areas on your site, everywhere from the titles and body text of your pages to your URLs to your meta tags to your image file names. On the other hand, successfully optimized websites tend to have thousands or even millions of keywords. You can't very well craft a single, unique page for every one of your keywords; at the same time, you can't try to cram everything onto a handful of pages with keyword stuffing and expect to rank for every individual keyword. It just doesn't work that way.

    So how does it work? The answer is keyword grouping and organization. By dividing your keywords into small, manageable groups of related keywords, you’ll cut down on your workload (significantly), while still creating targeted, specific pages.

    For example, let’s say you were running the website of an online pet store. You might be wise to create one keyword grouping for all your dog-related products, then one for all of your parakeet-related projects, etc. The next step would be to segment each individual group into smaller subgroups (parakeet cages, parakeet toys, parakeet snacks) and then even smaller groups for each type of product (low-fat parakeet snacks, luxury parakeet snacks… you get the idea). Now your pet store can create individual pages optimized for each small keyword group.

    A marketer attempting to optimize a web page for the "gourmet parakeet snacks" keyword group should consider doing most if not all of the following:

    • Using the keyword in the title of the page
    • Using the keyword in the URL (e.g., online-petstore.com/parakeets/snacks/gourmet )
    • Using the keyword, and variations (e.g., "gourmet parakeet snacks"), throughout the page copy
    • Using the keyword in the meta tags, especially the meta description
    • Using the keyword in any image file paths and in the images' alt text
    • Using the keyword as the anchor text in links back to the page from elsewhere on the site

    When optimizing your web pages, keep in mind that keyword relevance is more important than keyword density in SEO.
