David Graeber, geboren 1961 in den Vereinigten Staaten, unterrichtete bis zu seiner umstrittenen Entlassung 2007 als Anthropologe in Yale und lehrt seither am Goldsmith-College in London. Er ist bekennender Anarchist und Mitglied der »Industrial Workers of the World«.Sein Vater hat im Spanischen Bürgerkrieg gekämpft, und er selbst hat fast zwei Jahre in einer direkte Demokratie praktizierenden Gemeinschaft auf Madagaskar gelebt. Graeber ist ein Vordenker der Occupy-Bewegung.

Wenn Sie der Bank hundert Millionen Dollar schulden, gehört die Bank Ihnen. Amerikanisches Sprichwort Vor zwei Jahren besuchte ich infolge einiger Zufälle eine Gartenparty in der Westminster Abbey. Ich fühlte mich ein bisschen unbehaglich. Die anderen Gäste waren durchaus freundlich und nett, und Pater Graeme, der die Party organisiert hatte, war ein durch und durch liebenswürdiger und charmanter Gastgeber. Aber ich kam mir ein wenig fehl am Platz vor. Irgendwann sprach mich Pater Graeme an: Da stehe jemand gleich neben dem Brunnen, mit dem ich mich sicher gern unterhalten würde. Wie sich herausstellte, war es eine schick gekleidete junge Frau, laut Auskunft des Paters eine Anwältin – »aber eine von der engagierten Sorte. Sie arbeitet für eine Stiftung, die in London Gruppen juristisch berät, die gegen die Armut kämpfen. Sie beide haben sich wahrscheinlich viel zu erzählen.« Wir kamen ins Gespräch. Sie berichtete von ihrer Arbeit. Ich erzählte ihr, dass ich seit vielen Jahren in der Bewegung für weltweite Gerechtigkeit aktiv war – bei den »Globalisierungsgegnern«, wie es üblicherweise in der Presse hieß. Das interessierte sie: Natürlich hatte sie viel über Seattle, Genua, über Tränengas und Straßenkämpfe gelesen, aber … hatten wir denn mit all dem etwas erreicht? »Ja sicher, es ist sogar erstaunlich, wie viel wir in diesen ersten Jahren erreicht haben«, erwiderte ich. »Zum Beispiel ?« »Nun, zum Beispiel haben wir es beinahe geschafft, den IWF auszuschalten.« Zufällig wusste sie nicht, was der IWF ist, und ich erklärte ihr, dass der Internationale Währungsfonds als der Schuldeneintreiber der Welt fungiert: »Man könnte sagen, er ist in der Hochfinanz das Äquivalent zu den Jungs, die kommen und einem die Beine brechen.« Ich ließ mich über den historischen Hintergrund aus, erklärte, wie die OPEC-Staaten während der Ölkrise in den 1970er Jahren so viel von ihren neu erworbenen Reichtümern an westliche Banken überwiesen, dass die Banken gar nicht wussten, wo sie das Geld investieren sollten; wie Citibank und Chase Manhattan Bank deshalb Vertreter in alle Welt aussandten, die Politiker und Diktatoren der Dritten Welt überreden sollten, Kredite aufzunehmen (damals hieß das »Go-Go-Banking«); wie sie mit äußerst niedrigen Zinsen begannen, die aber dank der rigorosen Geldpolitik der Vereinigten Staaten in den 1980er Jahren bald auf 20 Prozent und mehr in die Höhe schossen; wie das in den 1980er und 1990er Jahren zur Schuldenkrise der Dritten Welt führte; wie sich dann der IWF einschaltete und darauf beharrte, zur Refinanzierung müssten die armen Länder gezwungen werden, die Subventionierung von Grundnahrungsmitteln aufzugeben oder sogar die Politik, strategische Lebensmittelreserven anzulegen sowie freie Gesundheitsversorgung und freie Bildung bereitzustellen; wie all dies damit endete, dass die ärmsten und am meisten gefährdeten Völker der Welt die grundlegende Unterstützung verloren hatten. Ich sprach von Armut, von der Ausplünderung öffentlicher Ressourcen, vom Zusammenbruch von Gesellschaften, von endemischer Gewalt, Mangelernährung, Hoffnungslosigkeit und zerstörten Leben. »Aber wie war ihre Einstellung?«, fragte die Anwältin. »Zum IWF? Wir wollten ihn abschaffen.« »Nein, ich meine, zu den Schulden der Dritten Welt.« »Oh, die wollten wir auch abschaffen. Zunächst einmal wollten wir den IWF daran hindern, dass er weiter Strukturanpassungsprogramme verlangte, die unmittelbaren Schaden anrichteten, und das erreichten wir überraschend schnell. Langfristiges Ziel war der Schuldenerlass. So etwas wie der vollständige Ablass in der Kirche. Nach unserer Einschätzung reichte es, dass seit 30 Jahren Geld aus den ärmsten Ländern in die reichsten geflossen war.« »Aber«, wandte sie ein, als wäre das offensichtlich, »sie hatten sich das Geld geliehen! Schulden muss man doch zurückzahlen.« An dieser Stelle wurde mir klar, dass das Gespräch ganz anders verlaufen würde, als ich es mir ursprünglich vorgestellt hatte. Wo sollte ich anfangen? Ich hätte damit anfangen können zu erklären, wie diese Kredite ursprünglich von selbsternannten Diktatoren aufgenommen worden waren, die den größten Teil des Geldes direkt auf ihre Schweizer Bankkonten überwiesen, und ich hätte sie fragen können, ob sie es gerecht fand, wenn man darauf beharrte, dass die Gläubiger ihr Geld nicht von dem Diktator oder seinen Kumpanen zurückerhielten, sondern indem sie buchstäblich hungrigen Kindern das Essen wegnahmen. Oder denken wir nur daran, wie viele dieser armen Länder durch das Wunder des Zinseszinseffekts bis heute das Drei- oder Vierfache der geliehenen Summen zurückgezahlt haben, und trotzdem hat sich ihre Kreditsumme kaum verringert. Ich hatte auch beobachtet, dass es einen Unterschied zwischen der Refinanzierung von Krediten und der Forderung gab, dass Länder, um eine Refinanzierung zu bekommen, einen orthodox marktwirtschaftlichen Kurs verfolgen müssen, der in Washington oder Zürich beschlossen wurde und dem die Menschen in den betroffenen Ländern nie zugestimmt haben und nie zustimmen werden. Ebenso war es einigermaßen unehrlich, zu verlangen, dass diese Länder demokratische Institutionen bekommen sollten, und dann darauf zu beharren, dass die gewählten Politiker nicht über den politischen Kurs in den Ländern entscheiden dürften. Oder ich beobachtete, dass die vom IWF verordnete Wirtschaftspolitik nicht einmal funktionierte. Aber all dem lag ein grundsätzlicheres Problem zugrunde: die Voraussetzung, dass Schulden überhaupt zurückgezahlt werden müssen. Das Erstaunliche an dem Satz »man muss seine Schulden zurückzahlen« ist, dass er nach der ökonomischen Standardtheorie nicht stimmt. Wer Geld verleiht, muss ein gewisses Risiko tragen. Wenn alle Kredite, egal wie idiotisch sie sind, immer einzutreiben wären – wenn es zum Beispiel kein Insolvenzrecht gäbe –, wären die Folgen katastrophal. Warum sollte ein Geldgeber nicht einen dummen Kredit vergeben? »Nun, ich weiß, es klingt wie eine Selbstverständlichkeit«, sagte ich, »aber das Lustige ist, dass, ökonomisch gesehen, Darlehen nicht so funktionieren. Finanzinstitute sollen Ressourcen in profitable Investitionen lenken. Wenn eine Bank eine Garantie hätte, dass sie Geld plus Zinsen zurückbekommt, ganz gleich was sie tut, würde das gesamte System nicht funktionieren. Nehmen wir einmal an, ich gehe in die nächste Filiale der Royal Bank of Scotland und sage: ›Hören Sie, ich habe einen ganz tollen Tipp für das Pferderennen bekommen. Könnten Sie mir 2 Millionen Pfund leihen?‹ Natürlich würden mich die Leute dort einfach auslachen. Denn sie wissen genau, dass sie ihr Geld nie wiedersehen, wenn mein Pferd nicht gewinnt. Stellen wir uns aber einmal vor, es gäbe ein Gesetz, das der Bank garantiert, dass sie ihr Geld unter allen Umständen zurückbekommt, selbst wenn es bedeuten würde, dass ich, sagen wir einmal, meine Tochter in die Sklaverei verkaufen oder meine Organe verscherbeln müsste oder etwas in der Art. Warum sollten sie mir dann das Geld nicht geben? Und lieber warten, bis jemand hereinspaziert, der einen realistischen Plan für einen Waschsalon oder dergleichen hat? Im Grunde ist genau das die Situation, die der IWF auf globaler Ebene geschaffen hat – auf diese Weise kriegt man alle Banken dazu, dass sie einer Bande offensichtlicher Gauner Milliarden von Dollar zuschieben.« Ich kam mit meinen Ausführungen nicht weiter, weil ungefähr an dieser Stelle ein betrunkener Banker auftauchte. Er hatte bemerkt, dass wir über Geld sprachen, und erzählte lustige Geschichten über.

Welcome to Sawdustmaking 101, it is my hope that this site will help novices better understand the fundamentals of woodworking.
It is not necessary to spend a fortune on tools to enjoy this hobby, many projects can be done with a minimum investment.
I have included links to two valuable resources, a Glossary with basic definitions of the terms commonly used in woodworking and an online reprint of Carpentry for Boys, a book written for woodworking apprentices in 1914.
Try to select projects you feel capable of doing but will also offer a bit of a challenge so you continue to gain additional skills, many simple plans can be found on the Projects page. Softwoods such as pine or spruce are good woods to practice with, when you become more confident move on to the more exotic woods.
Making shop fixtures and jigs is a great way to hone your skills, many of them can be made from used or recycled material, our Shop Jigs and Fixtures page has a lot of handy ideas.
Add tools as you need them, always buy the best tool you can afford. There is usually more than one way to accomplish the same result, tools are often a matter of preference than necessity. Consider buying used tools, the build quality of older tools is often superior to many of the new tools on today's market.
I have included sections on hand tools and power tools with basic information on using them along with links to suppliers that can supply you with further information on specific brands. Any purchase from those links helps keep this site online.
Never forget how dangerous a power tool can be, if you have any hesitation as to the safety of a situation stop and check out your options.

Whether your work area is a dedicated shop or a temporary cleared space in the basement or garage safety has to be the number one concern. A clean shop is a safe shop, spend a few minutes at the end of the day picking up and sweeping the floor . T his not only cleans your surroundin gs , it also clears your mind, th e solution to that problem you had earlier may suddenly appear.
If you must use an extension cord try to run it overhead and drop it down at the machine so you are not tripping over it. Plan to have a place for everything and everything in it's place.
Organize your time so you are doing the complicated parts of the project at the beginning of your work session while your mind is fresh. If you work all day at your job and then spend several hours in your shop you will get "silly tired", this is when mistakes are made and accidents happen.
M ost importantly enjoy your shop time, often it is the journey, not the destination that gives you the most satisfaction.

I have been involved one way or another with woodworking for the last six decades, it began when I was about ten years old, my father built me a jigsaw by modifying an old Briggs and Stratton engine. Looking back I don't believe it cost him anything more than the price of a few welding rods to give me hours of entertainment cutting doodads out of apple box wood. The last three have been limited due to health reasons but I still do small projects when necessary.
I was lucky enough to grow up on a farm so I learned from a very young age how to improvise to get a job done. I have owned several businesses over the years ranging from making toys to custom fireplace mantels for luxury home builders.

Flower Pot Pen Holder
Clay pots are a lot of fun to make crafts out of. You can use them for all sorts of crafts, and they are cheap, and easy for kids to use. The following is a fun clay pot craft idea:
For this craft you will need the following supplies:
Choose whatever colors you want or that will best match the decor of the room you will use the flower pot pen holder in.
Again choose any color. To make them look more like soil, choose browns and blacks, but for a festive, fun look, choose blues, greens, etc.
You do not want the click pens, rather ones with a cap that you remove in order to write. Click pens do not work for this project, a package of Bics will work great.
The bigger the flower the better, average size daisies, etc. work well.
This is green tape that florists use when making corsages etc. You can buy it at Wal-Mart.
Follow these instructions to make your clay pot flower pot pen holder.
Use paint to paint your pot, make it as fun, or as simple as you want. You will want to use a color scheme that will work well in your office, kitchen, or wherever else you may need pens on a regular basis. You can make the pot fit your personality. Paint stripes, paint polka dots, paint smiley faces, or whatever else works for you. Just get it painted so it is fun and festive, then let it dry.
While your flower pot dries you are going to make the flowers that go in it. To do this you are going to take your silk or artificial flowers and cut the stem so it is about one inch long. Then use the flower tape you have to attach the flower to the top of your pens. It may take a bit of tape to secure it tightly, and this is something an adult may want to help a child out with so that the tape lays smooth and looks nice. You can wrap the tape all the way down the pen if you wish to make it green and make it look for like a stalk. However, do not leave the flower stem that long, otherwise it will be uncomfortable in your hand, and hurt your fingers when you try to type.
Take your glass pebbles or marbles, and fill your flower pot so it is about ¾ of the way full. This is your soil.
Plant your flowers by sticking the pens, tip first, into the pebbles, so that they stand straight up, with the flowers up, and look like they are planted.
These simple flower pots are a lot of fun, and very useful as well. Your child will love having one in their room so that they can keep track of all of their pens. You can use pencils as well, but the drawback is, if you do that you will need a separate eraser, as the eraser end will be covered by the flower and tape. These make great gifts for grandparents and friends.

To start – I pulled the yarn over the end of the wire first, then I starting wrapping the yarn around the wire, tied a knot and then continued to wrap around the rest of the wire (covering my knot with the yarn as I went). I did the same at the end, except I tied a knot and left about two feet hanging on.

Absolutely love this. I’m not big on valentine’s day but I can already think of a million other things to do with this idea. I especailly can’t wait to make something for my neice’s room. Her name or ABC’s or a quote from her favorite book, I think they’d look so great hanging on her wall. The only question I have is when you hit letters like the O where you have to double over part of the letter, did you start the letter than tie off the yarn and start over at the bottom of the letter or did you just double back over what you had already wrapped? I hope that question makes sense :p
You ask a great question! I forgot to mention this in the tutorial – for the “O” I did cut, knot and start with a new strand of yarn to avoid going over the yarn with another layer and bulking up the thickness too much. Do you know how long it needs to be ( so it is easier to wrap the yarn with a cut piece of clothesline). Also, can it be regular plastic clothesline, or does it need to be with wire? The plastic clothesline is a 1/3 the cost of the conduit stuff
Hi Jennifer – I pulled out a lot of yarn – about 3 to 4 times the length of the word – better to have too much than not enough. I agree – so much easier to wrap it around with a small bundle of yarn in your hand rather than a full skein. As for the laundry line – I recommend anything with a wire – it will hold the shape. If the plastic clothesline can hold a form – than that should work. Send along a photo when you’re done – I’d love to see it. Thanks for your question, take care, Camilla

I love this project so much! I gave this to my Mom for mother’s day and she loved it! If you do the same thing with thinner yarn and wire, could you make jewelry with it? That is the project that i want to see next

I’ve been doing this for years with thinner wire. You can “write” names for nametags for presents and stockings, hang them on stemware to ID drinks. There are websites that show how to make name or initial pins and pendants out of sterling or gold wire. You can also make interesting shapes or designs and hang in windows as sun catchers. Can also be adhered to decorate frames, scrapbooks, just about anything. I’ve even made signs for my children’s rooms. Good for temporary signs for parties, ex. Powder Room. Armature wire, or any 16 gauge wire from the hardware store is much easier to manipulate than wire hangers, and not very expensive.

Hi! Thank you so much for this tutorial! I made it with about 15 girls at our youth valentine’s party! Each girl made different things out of the wire, some made the word “love” their name, a heart and arrow going thru…very creative! It was the PERFECT craft! They loved it!

I’ve been wanting to make this for a couple of months and finally just finished it today. Since I’m really limited on the supplies I have at my disposal, I wasn’t sure what I could use for wire. I was throwing away an old spiral-bound notebook when I started playing with the wire then realized I could use that for the project! Yay re-purposing! I ended up ending mine with a heart instead of only the word, and since my yarn is fairly thin, I did a few layers. It looks great! I’m in such desperate need of using anything to brighten up my room and make it look a little bit more homey and this is perfect. Thank you!

I am doing this now and it is not as easy as I wanted it to be. I used some old wire we had from putting up fence in the cback yard.So word of advice to anyone use an easy to bend wire.

i love this diy! but i have a question. at the end where you have the extra yarn, how did you make it look “braided” like that? did you knot a second piece of yarn at the end and wrap it around like that?
Don’t remember where I found this, but loved it and made it for my wife for Valentine’s Day this year. Did a bit of a twist on it – used a coat hanger so that it was sturdier (though much harder to work with), and left a length after the “e” to create a sort of stand/rest so that it stood up on it’s own. I wrapped that part as well and glued a small yarn ball of the same color to the end of it, bent it just so, and made the stand/rest part look like a ball and trail of yarn leading to the word. Sort of came off looking like one of those frozen action statues like a spilling cup or whatever, but this as yarn sort of magically spelling out the word “Love”. Anyway, love it, thanks for the great idea.
